Dear Christian Sammer,
In this issue, we delve into the details of the German government's coalition agreement, released on April 9th, and explore the key developments and policy directions that matter most to our community.
As part of our Improving Research Series, we spoke with Prof. Leising this month about the critical issue of power abuse in academia. We will share the video and slides from our talk as soon as they are available. In the meantime, we would like to highlight the important work of MaWi, a network dedicated to supporting those affected by abuse of power in academia and raising awareness.
We also look ahead: introducing our newly elected working group spokespersons, who are tackling the important question of how we define the postdoc phase. You are warmly invited to join our upcoming workshop on this topic.
As always, we continue to explore career paths beyond the postdoc, this time with insights from Dr. Anh Vu Doan on how to transition to industry.
Finally, we are excited to invite you to the launch of the Postdoc Regional Group in Lower Saxony, and to join this year’s Postdoc Appreciation Week—a moment to connect, reflect, and celebrate the work you do every day.
>From critical reflection to connection and celebration, we hope you find something here that speaks to you.
Warmly,
Judith Münch & Alexandra Mccormack
Your Coordinators of the German Postdoc Network
Germany's Coalition Agreement: What Does it Mean for Researchers?
<http://mailings.germanpostdoc.net/c/105495765/71223457985-suunlf>
Last week, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the Christian Social Union (CSU), and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) announced a coalition agreement in Germany. It contains several key provisions that will have a significant impact on the research landscape. From a new ministry for research and technology to increased funding for research and improved working conditions for researchers, we'll explore what the coalition agreement means for early-career researchers in Germany.

Workshop: What Defines a Postdoc?
We are excited to invite you to a workshop focused on the question: What Defines a Postdoc? In Germany, the term "Postdoc" is still inconsistently defined, which has hindered the development of a unified community and advocacy efforts for early-career researchers. This workshop aims to address that gap by collaboratively shaping a widely accepted definition based on our collective experiences. We invite all postdocs and postdoc networks to join this first step in a series of workshops designed to give our community a stronger voice.
Register now <http://mailings.germanpostdoc.net/c/105336304/71223457985-suunlf> , share your perspectives and contribute to a definition that truly reflects the postdoc experience!

Our WG Spokespersons are Elected!
For the very first time, the working groups of the German Postdoc Network have elected their spokespersons—and we could not be more excited to introduce them. These dedicated postdocs are stepping up to lead, bringing fresh energy, ideas, and passion to the heart of our community. Their work will shape not only the direction of each group but also the future of the GPN itself. We are incredibly grateful for their commitment and spirit. Curious to learn more, meet the new spokespersons, or get involved yourself?
Find all the information here <http://mailings.germanpostdoc.net/c/105326166/71223457985-suunlf> and become part of the network.

Throwback: Rethinking Success - How Postdocs Can Thrive in Industry
As part of our lunch talk series on career paths beyond the postdoc, we welcomed Dr. Anh Vu Doan for an inspiring session titled Rethinking Success – How Postdocs Can Thrive in Industry. Drawing from his own journey—from postdoctoral researcher to project manager in the semiconductor industry—he shared valuable insights on transferable skills, industry expectations, and how to navigate the transition. We followed up with a short interview, where he talks about leadership, communication, and how to identify the right role beyond academia. You can read the full interview on our website here <http://mailings.germanpostdoc.net/c/105336043/71223457985-suunlf> .

💡Spotlight - Did you know about..
...the Network against Abuse of Power in Science?
The Netzwerk gegen Machtmissbrauch in der Wissenschaft e.V. <http://mailings.germanpostdoc.net/c/105324694/71223457985-suunlf> (short: MaWi, Network against Abuse of Power in Science) offers external, independent and partial counselling to those affected by abuse of power in science. Abuse of power is a problem for society as a whole and is therefore also widespread in science. However, there has been little awareness of abuse of power in science.
On our website we also document case examples, which can be sent to us anonymously. This is because abuse of power is a very diverse phenomenon that is intertwined with various cross-cutting dimensions, such as the requirements of good scientific practice, various categories of discrimination and precarious employment conditions in science. We offer workshops and lectures for institutions to raise awareness of the issue. We also contribute to policy debates and exchange ideas with other initiatives and committed individuals.
<http://mailings.germanpostdoc.net/c/105180138/71223457985-suunlf>
We believe the work of MaWi is invaluable in shedding light on a topic that remains too often taboo. Through independent counselling, documentation of cases, and awareness-raising events, MaWi offers crucial support to those affected and pushes for systemic change. If you are looking for resources, advice, or simply want to better understand the dynamics of power in academic structures—we highly recommend exploring what MaWi has to offer.
